Darlington hopeful of Terry deal

By BBC Sport
Friday, 30th July 2010
Darlington hopeful of Terry deal.

Darlington are hopeful of securing a deal for midfielder Paul Terry after the former Yeovil player impressed in a 2-1 win at Kendal on Thursday.Terry, 31, was a key player in Rushden and Diamonds play-off push last season and boss Mark Cooper sees his experience as useful to his squad.

"He brings a wealth of League One, League Two and Conference football experience with him," Cooper said.

"We've a few bits to sort out but all being well, he'll sign."

Cooper added: "He was arguably Rushden's best player last season and with the injury worries of Michael Brough and Gary Smith's unstable ankle, we could potentially be left short in that area.

Tough enough to screen a back four, mobile enough to supply support to an attack, Terry is the ideal complement at Blue Square Bet Premier level.

Matt Newsum - BBC Sport

"I thought it was prudent to bring in another experienced midfield player."

Terry, brother of England defender John, left Rushden in June after one season with the club. His most successful spell came with Yeovil Town, with whom he won promotion from League Two in 2004/05, and he has also played for Dagenham, Leyton Orient and Grays Athletic.

The Quakers are also hopeful of snapping up former Chesterfield defender Kevin Austin, who has joined the club on trial following a short spell with Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Barrow.
