The first installment of another exclusive feature brought to you by Quakers Mad.

Speaking exclusively with Darlington physiotherapist Paul Gough he gives us an insight into the myths and truths behind the magic sponge. The magic sponge bit is just a myth.
"When a player goes down I obviously have seen the incident, the first thing that I have to ask is can you move. It is then a case of addressing how bad it is and communicating with the manager and player as to whether he can continue. If a player has torn a muscle it is sometimes better to take them off dependent on conditions that may make the injury more serious.

Physiotherapy is a science and long term injuries Goughy has to use physiology to keep players motivated.
"When a player snaps a cruciate tendon they have a scan then an operation which in tales taking a slice of the patella tendon to reattach the cruciate tendon. This is when the science comes in. After a number of weeks in plaster the players then have to rehabilitate. They have a programme of biking, rowing, swimming and light weights to rebuild the quadriceps muscle. Most of the machines are computer based so we can see the level of deficiency that has built up.

The long term injured Alan Harrison is now back in training.
"Alan's injury was complex as he had a rod inserted to help rebuild the bone. However his body reacted against the rod and failed to graft. This was because it got infected so he had to have a course of antibiotics to sort the infection out and the bones were then able to heal. Players like Alan face along time in recovery, it is then a case of keeping them motivated as they do become depressed and it's part of my job to keep them at it else they will drift out of the game if the injury fails to respond. For some lads it's soul destroying that's why we as physios need the physiology side of things to help them with the hard times."

On Darlington's other long term injured Clark Keltie is well ahead of schedule, he will be the feature of next weeks The Man With The Magic Sponge brought to you exclusively by Quakers Mad.
